Historically, the brand was founded by Jim Gentes in 1985 and was later acquired by Bell Sports in 1996. After various ownership changes involving Vista Outdoor, the brand was spun off into a new outdoor product entity called Revelyst. In late 2024, Revelyst was acquired by Strategic Value Partners (SVP), a global investment firm, which now oversees the brand's portfolio. While the brand remains headquartered in the United States, its manufacturing processes are primarily outsourced to specialist factories in China to maintain competitive pricing for its consumer-grade models like the Rift.
