Levy's Real Jewish Rye

Levy's Real Jewish Rye is a historic American bread brand founded in 1888 by Henry S. Levy, a Russian Jewish immigrant. Originally established in Brooklyn, New York, the brand became a cultural icon in the 1960s through its famous "You Don't Have to Be Jewish to Love Levy's" advertising campaign, which celebrated multiculturalism and diversity. The bread is known for its traditional sourdough starter and thick-crust texture, which was originally baked on stone hearths.

In 1979, after 91 years as a family-owned business, the bakery ceased its Brooklyn operations and sold its recipes, name, and original starter to Arnold Bakers. Today, the brand is owned by Bimbo Bakeries USA, the American subsidiary of the global Mexican bakery conglomerate Grupo Bimbo. While its roots are in New York City, the product is currently manufactured in various commercial bakeries across the United States to maintain national distribution.
