The brand's history began in 1901 when it was launched by the Swiss chocolatier Philippe Suchard in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. The name 'Milka' is a portmanteau of its two primary ingredients: Milch (milk) and Kakao (cocoa). While it has Swiss origins, the brand's primary production has been centered in Lörrach, Germany, for over a century, with additional manufacturing facilities located in countries like Austria, Slovakia, and Poland.

Ownership of the brand has transitioned through several major corporate entities over the decades. In 1990, it was acquired by Kraft Foods, which later split its business in 2012. This split resulted in the creation of Mondelēz International, which now serves as the ultimate owner of the Milka brand. As of 2026, Mondelēz International continues to manage Milka as one of its flagship global 'power brands,' maintaining its status as a leader in the international confectionery market while navigating modern challenges such as sustainability and evolving consumer preferences.
