Trader Joe's branded products found in European ALDI stores, such as this natural nut mix, are part of a unique branding strategy by ALDI Nord. While the Trader Joe's name is famous in the United States as a standalone grocery chain, in European markets like Spain, Germany, and the Netherlands, the name is used by ALDI Nord as a private label for specific snack and nut products.
The history of this brand is tied to the Albrecht family in Germany. After World War II, brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht expanded their mother's grocery business into the global giant known as ALDI. In 1961, the company split into ALDI Nord (North) and ALDI Süd (South). While ALDI Süd operates the ALDI stores in the United States, ALDI Nord purchased the American Trader Joe's company in 1979. Consequently, ALDI Nord holds the rights to the Trader Joe's name and uses it for high-quality snack lines within its European discount stores.
The nuts themselves—including walnuts, cashews, hazelnuts, and almonds—are sourced from various global regions (such as the US for walnuts/almonds and Vietnam or India for cashews) and are typically processed and packaged in Europe for local distribution.
