Friele is Norway's oldest and most renowned coffee brand, with a history dating back to 1799. It was founded by ship captain Herman Friele, who established a trading house in Bergen. Over the centuries, the brand became a staple in Norwegian households, particularly for its 'Frokostkaffe' (Breakfast Coffee) line, which is known for its balanced flavor profiles catering to Scandinavian tastes.

The product shown is the 'Mørkbrent' (dark roast) variety, which offers a fuller body and more intense aroma compared to the original medium roast. While the coffee beans are sourced from various tropical regions including Brazil, Colombia, and Guatemala, the manufacturing and roasting process takes place at Friele's modern facility in Midtun, Bergen.

In 2013, the family-owned company was sold to the international coffee giant D.E Master Blenders 1753. Following subsequent corporate mergers, the brand is now under the ultimate ownership of JDE Peet's, one of the world's largest pure-play coffee and tea companies. Despite the transition to international ownership, Friele maintains its strong Norwegian identity and local production in Bergen.
