Dermophil (historically known as Dermophil Indien) is an iconic French lip and skin care brand with a legacy dating back to the First World War. It was founded in 1919 by Joseph Uzac, a pharmacist who developed a specialized ointment to protect soldiers from the harsh cold and frostbite in the trenches. The name 'Indien' (Indian) was originally added to the brand because the formula featured Peru balsam, which at the time was colloquially referred to as 'Baume des Indes'.

While the brand remains deeply rooted in its French pharmaceutical heritage and continues to manufacture its products in Normandy, France, its ownership has evolved. In 2016, the brand was integrated into Melisana Pharma, which is a subsidiary of the German pharmaceutical giant Klosterfrau (Klosterfrau Healthcare Group). In 2021, although the physical manufacturing site in Magny-le-Désert was sold to the Pharma & Beauty (P&B) Group to handle industrial production, Melisana Pharma/Klosterfrau retained full ownership of the brand and its commercial development. Today, it remains a staple in European pharmacies, particularly in France and Switzerland, where it is distributed by local entities like Melisana AG.
