Specialized Bicycles

Specialized Bicycle Components is a premier American cycling brand founded in 1974 by Mike Sinyard in Morgan Hill, California. The brand is globally recognized for pioneering the first mass-produced mountain bike, the Stumpjumper, and for its high-performance S-Works racing division.

While Specialized remains an American company headquartered in California, where all research, design, and prototyping (such as testing in their proprietary 'Win Tunnel') take place, the actual manufacturing is predominantly outsourced to high-end factories in East Asia. The majority of their frames and components are produced in Taiwan and China, primarily through a long-standing industrial partnership with Merida Bikes. Some assembly and smaller production runs may also occur in other locations like Vietnam or Cambodia.

In terms of ownership, Specialized is a privately held company. In 2001, the Taiwanese manufacturer Merida Bikes acquired a 49% stake in the company. However, founder Mike Sinyard has historically maintained majority ownership and control, continuing to lead the brand's vision from its California base.
