Ovomaltine, known as Ovaltine in many English-speaking countries, is a Swiss heritage brand with a history dating back to 1865. It was originally formulated by pharmacist Dr. Georg Wander in Bern as a nutritional supplement to combat high childhood mortality. His son, Albert Wander, further refined the recipe by adding egg, milk, and cocoa, launching the brand commercially in 1904.
Today, the brand is owned by the British multinational Associated British Foods (ABF), which acquired the manufacturer Wander AG from Novartis in 2002. While ABF holds the global rights, Nestlé acquired the US rights to the brand in 2007. Manufacturing for the European market remains centered in Neuenegg, Switzerland, though production facilities also exist in Thailand and China to serve global demand.
