Kingston Technology is a global leader in the memory and storage industry, renowned for its DRAM modules, SSDs, and USB flash drives. Founded in 1987 by engineers John Tu and David Sun in Orange County, California, the brand rose to prominence by solving a critical shortage of memory chips with innovative module designs. The company operates a sophisticated global supply chain with significant manufacturing and logistics facilities located in the United States, Taiwan, China, and Ireland.
Ownership of the brand has a unique history; in 1996, SoftBank Corporation of Japan acquired an 80% stake in the company for $1.5 billion. However, in a rare move, the original founders bought back that same stake in 1999 for $450 million. Since then, Kingston has remained a privately held, founder-controlled corporation. While they sold their HyperX gaming peripheral division to HP Inc. in 2021, they retained the memory and storage portions of that line, now branded as Kingston FURY.
