SanDisk storage products

SanDisk is a world-renowned brand in the flash memory industry, originally founded in 1988 as SunDisk by Eli Harari, Sanjay Mehrotra, and Jack Yuan in Milpitas, California. The company pioneered early flash storage technologies, including the first flash-based solid-state drive (SSD) in 1991. After decades of independent growth and a public listing on the Nasdaq, SanDisk was acquired by Western Digital Corporation in 2016 for approximately $16 billion, operating as a subsidiary for several years.

In a major strategic shift completed in early 2025, Western Digital spun off its flash storage business into a newly independent, publicly traded company. This entity, often referred to under the re-established SanDisk name (Nasdaq: SNDK), now manages the development and sale of flash-based products including memory cards, USB drives, and SSDs.

Manufacturing for SanDisk products is a global operation. A significant portion of its NAND flash chips is produced through a long-standing joint venture with Kioxia (formerly Toshiba Memory) at fabrication facilities in Japan, specifically in Yokkaichi and Kitakami. Final assembly, packaging, and testing occur across multiple locations, including Malaysia (Batu Kawan) and China (Shanghai), ensuring a diverse international supply chain.
