PowerBar is a pioneering brand in the sports nutrition industry, credited with creating the first modern energy bar. Founded in 1986 in Berkeley, California, by marathoner Brian Maxwell and nutritionist Jennifer Biddulph, the brand was born from a need for specialized fuel during endurance competitions. The original recipe was developed in the founders' kitchen and quickly became a staple for cyclists and runners worldwide.
In 2000, the brand was acquired by the Swiss food giant Nestlé, which expanded its global footprint significantly. However, in 2014, Nestlé sold its premium sports nutrition business, including PowerBar, to Post Holdings, Inc. Since then, PowerBar has been managed under the Premier Nutrition Company subsidiary. Today, the brand continues to operate as a leader in the performance nutrition market, offering a variety of gels, powders, and bars designed for athletes. Manufacturing occurs in multiple locations, with major facilities situated in Boise, Idaho, and various sites across Europe to serve its international markets.
