Lenovo was founded in 1984 in Beijing, China, originally under the name Legend. The company was established by a group of engineers from the Institute of Computing Technology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, led by Liu Chuanzhi. After initially finding success with a Chinese-character circuit board, the brand rebranded to Lenovo in 2003—a portmanteau of "Legend" and "novo" (Latin for new)—to facilitate global expansion.

Today, Lenovo is the world's largest personal computer vendor and a major player in smartphones and server infrastructure. Its manufacturing footprint is truly global, with a majority of its production occurring in China (major hubs in Wuhan and Hefei), but the company also operates significant facilities in Mexico, Brazil, India, Hungary, Japan, and the United States (North Carolina). This diverse supply chain allows Lenovo to serve over 180 markets effectively.

Lenovo Group Limited is a publicly traded company incorporated in Hong Kong. It maintains a dual-headquarters structure with global operational centers in Beijing, China, and Morrisville, North Carolina, USA. Its growth has been fueled by landmark acquisitions, most notably the purchase of IBM's Personal Computing division in 2005 and Motorola Mobility from Google in 2014.
