Datsun is an iconic Japanese automotive brand that has seen two distinct eras of production. Originally established in 1931, it became the primary name for Nissan's export vehicles from 1958 to 1986, gaining worldwide fame for models like the 240Z and the 510. The brand was phased out in the mid-1980s as Nissan consolidated its global identity under a single name.
In 2013, the brand was revived by Nissan as a low-cost marquee targeting emerging markets, specifically India, Indonesia, Russia, and South Africa. During this second phase, manufacturing took place in various locations, including the Renault-Nissan Alliance plant in Chennai, India. However, following a shift in global strategy and declining sales, Nissan officially discontinued the Datsun brand for a second time in 2022. While no new models are being mass-produced in 2026, the brand remains under the ultimate ownership of Nissan Motor Corporation, which continues to provide after-sales service and parts for existing Datsun owners.
