Dr. Martens, colloquially known as Doc Martens, is an iconic British footwear brand that emerged from a unique collaboration between German innovation and British craftsmanship. The brand's signature air-cushioned sole was originally invented by Dr. Klaus Märtens in Germany in 1945 to aid his recovery from a foot injury. In 1959, the British shoe manufacturer R. Griggs Group acquired the patent rights, added the famous yellow stitching and grooved sole, and launched the first 1460 boot on April 1, 1960.

While the brand maintains a heritage 'Made in England' factory in Wollaston, Northamptonshire, approximately 90% of its total production was shifted to Asia in the early 2000s to ensure commercial viability. Today, high-volume models like the Jadon platform boot are predominantly manufactured in Vietnam, China, and Thailand. Since 2021, the company has operated as Dr. Martens plc, a public limited company listed on the London Stock Exchange, with major investment interests currently held by firms like Permira.
