Oakley was established in 1975 by Jim Jannard in his garage in California, initially producing specialized motorcycle grips using a proprietary material known as Unobtainium. The brand's expansion into eyewear began in the early 1980s with the introduction of the O-Frame goggle, eventually becoming a global leader in sports performance equipment and lifestyle pieces.

While the brand maintains its headquarters and primary design hub in Foothill Ranch, California, its manufacturing footprint has expanded significantly. Since its acquisition by the Italian eyewear giant Luxottica in 2007, production has become a global operation. While some specialized components and assembly still occur in the United States, a substantial portion of Oakley frames and lenses are manufactured in Luxottica's advanced facilities in Italy and China to meet global demand.

Today, Oakley operates as a key subsidiary of EssilorLuxottica, following the 2018 merger of Essilor and Luxottica. This corporate structure places Oakley within a portfolio that includes other iconic brands like Ray-Ban and Persol. The brand remains dedicated to its roots in sports innovation, continuing to hold hundreds of patents for its unique lens technologies and frame materials.
