Veritas Technologies LLC is a prominent American international data management company. Its history is a complex series of acquisitions and mergers, beginning in 1983 as Tolerant Systems before being renamed Veritas Software. The brand gained global recognition for its storage management and backup solutions, notably NetBackup and Backup Exec.
After a decade-long merger with Symantec (2005–2016), Veritas was demerged and sold to the private equity firm The Carlyle Group. In a significant industry shift effective late 2024 and early 2025, Veritas merged its core data protection and security business with Cohesity, which now serves as the ultimate owner of the primary Veritas data management portfolio. Some specialized business units, such as Backup Exec and InfoScale, were briefly separated into a spin-off called Arctera before being acquired by Cloud Software Group in 2025.
