Originally launched in the 1980s under the German professional hair care giant Goldwell (founded by Hans Erich Dotter in Darmstadt), the brand became famous for its innovative use of silk protein and keratin technologies. For decades, it operated as a sub-brand within the Goldwell portfolio.

In 2023, the brand underwent a significant global relaunch, transitioning from a sub-brand to an independent standalone masterbrand within the Kao Salon Division. While historically rooted in salon hair care, the brand expanded into complementary personal care items like hand creams to provide a holistic luxury experience.

The brand is currently owned by the Kao Corporation, a major Japanese multinational chemical and cosmetic company headquartered in Tokyo. However, its operational heart, research, and primary manufacturing for the Salon Division remain centered in Darmstadt, Germany, reflecting its European heritage.
