The MSR Advance Pro 2 is a specialized, single-wall, four-season tent designed for professional alpinists and high-altitude mountaineering. It is a hallmark product of Mountain Safety Research (MSR), a brand deeply rooted in technical safety and engineering. The tent is recognized for its minimalist design, utilizing high-performance materials like Easton Syclone composite poles to withstand extreme alpine conditions while remaining ultralight.
While MSR's headquarters and primary R&D facility are located in Seattle, Washington, where many of its technical products are assembled or tested, its broader product line, including tents, is produced across a global supply chain. This often includes manufacturing facilities in Vietnam, China, and Taiwan, though high-end technical assembly occasionally takes place in the United States or Ireland for specific European distributions.
Originally founded in 1969 by Seattle engineer Larry Penberthy as a safety newsletter and equipment testing laboratory, MSR was later acquired by the outdoor retail giant REI in 1981. In 2001, Cascade Designs, Inc., based in Seattle, purchased MSR. Today, Cascade Designs remains the ultimate owner of MSR, managing it alongside other iconic outdoor brands like Therm-a-Rest and Platypus.
