Géramont is a renowned brand of French soft cheese, originally created in 1935 by the Fromagerie Gérard in the village of Le Tholy, located in the Vosges region of eastern France. The name 'Géramont' is a portmanteau of the founder's name, Gérard, and 'Mont' (mountain), referencing its mountainous origins. While the brand is deeply rooted in French tradition, it was specifically tailored and marketed to the German market starting in 1973, where it has since become the leading brand in the soft cheese segment.
Manufacturing continues primarily at the original Fromagerie Gérard site in Le Tholy, France, though some product variants may be produced in other facilities within Europe to meet high demand. Ownership of the brand transitioned in 1971 when Fromagerie Gérard merged with the Bongrain family business. This entity, formerly known as Bongrain, rebranded in 2015 as Savencia Fromage & Dairy. As of 2026, the brand remains under the ultimate ownership of the Savencia Group, a major French multinational food company headquartered in Viroflay, France, specializing in cheese and dairy specialties.
