The brand was founded by Simon Gilboy, a master furniture restorer with decades of experience in French polishing and antique conservation. Frustrated by the declining quality of commercial polishes that increasingly relied on petrochemical solvents and synthetic waxes, Simon began formulating his own blend in 2015.

The manufacturing process remains deeply rooted in traditional craftsmanship and is centered in Staverton, South Devon, England. The company operates from a solar-powered workshop located adjacent to the South Devon Steam Railway. Gilboys is distinguished by its commitment to sustainability and ethical sourcing; it utilizes organic beeswax from local hives at Buckfast Abbey and higher-grade natural waxes like T1 carnauba and myrica wax. Unlike mass-produced alternatives, the brand uses pure pine turpentine as a solvent and avoids harmful chemicals like xylene or toluene.
