ICA (Inköpscentralernas Aktiebolag) was founded in 1938 in Sweden, based on a business model originally introduced in 1917 to allow independent retailers to benefit from collective purchasing power. Today, the brand is owned by ICA Gruppen AB, which is headquartered in Solna, Sweden. Since its privatization in early 2022, the ultimate ownership is held by ICA-handlarnas Förbund (the Association of ICA Retailers), which maintains a majority stake of approximately 87%, with the remaining shares owned by the pension fund AMF. This structure ensures that the brand remains under the collective control of its independent store owners.
