Osprey was founded in 1974 by Mike Pfotenhauer in Santa Cruz, California. Originally focusing on custom-fit backpacks stitched by the founder himself, the brand eventually moved its headquarters to Cortez, Colorado, in 1994. To meet growing global demand, Osprey transitioned its primary manufacturing to Vietnam in 2002. Unlike many competitors, the founder and his family relocated to Ho Chi Minh City for several years to establish a dedicated design and quality control center, ensuring that the brand maintains its high standards and ethical manufacturing practices.

In December 2021, Osprey was acquired by Helen of Troy Limited, a major consumer products corporation based in El Paso, Texas. Despite the change in ownership, Osprey continues to operate out of its Colorado headquarters and maintains its iconic 'All Mighty Guarantee,' a lifetime repair policy supported by a specialized team of sewers in the United States who handle warranty repairs. Today, Osprey is recognized as a global leader in high-performance technical packs for hiking, climbing, and urban travel.
