Waze is a community-driven satellite navigation application that revolutionized the GPS industry by utilizing real-time, user-submitted data. Originally founded in Israel in 2006 by Ehud Shabtai, Amir Shinar, and Uri Levine, the project began as a volunteer initiative called FreeMap Israel. The founders' goal was to create a free, crowdsourced digital map that would bypass the need for expensive, proprietary data from traditional GPS providers. By gamifying the mapping experience—where users "paved" new roads simply by driving with the app open—Waze quickly built a highly accurate and dynamic map.
In 2013, Google acquired Waze for approximately $1.15 billion to enhance its own mapping capabilities and tap into Waze's deeply engaged community. Since then, Waze has operated as a distinct brand under Google's umbrella. While its research and development (R&D) and engineering core remains heavily rooted in Ra'anana, Israel, the brand's strategic leadership and global operations are headquartered in Mountain View, California, alongside Google. This dual-presence allows Waze to maintain its unique startup culture and community focus while leveraging the massive infrastructure and AI capabilities of its parent company.
Today, Waze is a subsidiary within the Google Geo division and falls under the ultimate ownership of Alphabet Inc. It continues to stand out for its granular real-time alerts on hazards, police activity, and traffic conditions, driven by a global network of over 150 million monthly active users.
