Chery Automobile Co., Ltd., founded in 1997, is one of China's most prominent automotive manufacturers and has held the title of China's leading passenger vehicle exporter for over two decades. The brand was established by the local government of Wuhu in the Anhui province to stimulate economic growth. Since its inception, Chery has transitioned from utilizing legacy European technology to developing its own proprietary engines under the ACTECO brand and advanced electric vehicle platforms.
Historically a state-owned enterprise, Chery has recently undergone structural changes, including a reported initial public offering (IPO) in 2025 that shifted its status to a public company with state-private mixed ownership. Major stakeholders include the Anhui and Wuhu municipal governments alongside private entities like Luxshare and CATL. The company operates a sophisticated global manufacturing network, with primary plants in Wuhu, China, and additional assembly facilities in Brazil, Egypt, Indonesia, and Russia to serve local markets.
Under its 'multi-brand' strategy, Chery manages an extensive portfolio including the flagship Chery brand, Exeed for luxury vehicles, Jetour for lifestyle SUVs, and export-focused brands like Omoda and Jaecoo. It also maintains a significant 50:50 joint venture with Jaguar Land Rover, reflecting its deep integration into the global automotive supply chain.
