Valio is Finland's leading dairy and food company, with a rich history dating back to its founding in 1905. Originally established as a butter export cooperative by Finnish dairy farmers, it has grown into a global innovator, particularly known for its pioneering work under Nobel Prize-winning chemist Artturi Ilmari Virtanen. Today, Valio is renowned for its advancements in lactose-free technology and functional foods.

The majority of Valio's manufacturing takes place at its 13 production plants located across Finland. It also operates two production facilities in Estonia (Laeva and Võru). The company is uniquely structured as a cooperative owned by approximately 3,200 Finnish dairy farmers through local cooperatives. This model ensures that the profits are distributed back to the primary producers, supporting the local agricultural economy and sustainable food production in Northern Europe.
