Bose is a premier American audio equipment manufacturer that has become synonymous with high-end sound and noise-canceling technology. Founded in 1964 by Dr. Amar Bose, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the company began as a research-intensive enterprise focused on psychoacoustics—the study of how humans perceive sound. This research led to the development of legendary products like the 901 Direct/Reflecting speaker system and the first commercially successful active noise-reduction headphones.

While the company remains headquartered in Framingham, Massachusetts, its manufacturing footprint has expanded globally to meet international demand. Today, Bose produces its wide range of headphones, home theater systems, and portable speakers across facilities in Mexico, China, and Southeast Asia, while maintaining high-end research and certain specialized production lines in the United States.

Ownership of Bose is unique in the corporate world. Dr. Amar Bose donated the majority of the company's non-voting shares to MIT in 2011. This arrangement ensures that the university receives dividends to fund research and education, while the company remains privately held and independent, allowing it to maintain its long-term focus on innovation without the pressure of quarterly earnings reports for public shareholders. In 2023, the 'Bose Professional' division was sold to the private equity firm Transom Capital Group, but the core consumer electronics brand remains under the original private structure.
