Swizzles, formally known as Swizzels Matlow, is one of the most storied names in the British confectionery industry. The company's origins date back to 1928 when Alfred and Maurice Matlow began making jelly sweets in London. After a merger with David Dee's 'Swizzels' factory and a move to New Mills, Derbyshire, during the Blitz, the brand became a staple of British culture. It is famous for inventing iconic treats such as Love Hearts, Refreshers, Parma Violets, and Drumstick lollies.

While many historic British confectionery brands have been acquired by international conglomerates, Swizzles remains a rare example of a successful, large-scale independent family business. The company continues to manufacture the vast majority of its products at its historic facility in New Mills, High Peak. This commitment to local production and independent ownership has allowed the brand to maintain its heritage while expanding its global reach to more than 20 countries.

The brand's ownership has remained within the founding families for generations. As of 2024 and moving forward, Swizzels Matlow Limited continues to operate as an independent entity. This independence is a core part of its brand identity, distinguishing it from competitors owned by major multinational corporations like Nestlé or Mondelēz International.
