Vivitar is a historic brand name in the photography industry, originally founded as Ponder & Best in Santa Monica, California, in 1938. The brand became famous for its high-quality third-party lenses and consumer cameras. During the 1980s and 1990s, when the 320Z Power Zoom was marketed, Vivitar outsourced manufacturing to various optical factories in Japan, Taiwan, and China.
Following several changes in ownership after a 2008 bankruptcy filing, the Vivitar brand was acquired by Sakar International. Today, Sakar utilizes the Vivitar brand broad spectrum of consumer electronics, including digital cameras, smart home devices, and mobile accessories. While the brand remains rooted in American history, its modern manufacturing and corporate headship are managed through Sakar's global distribution network headquartered in New Jersey.
