Originally founded in California after World War II, the brand became legendary in the 1970s and 80s for its high-quality 'Series 1' lenses, which were designed by engineers in the USA and manufactured through partnerships with various Japanese optics companies.

Following a series of corporate changes and acquisitions in the 2000s, the brand was eventually acquired by Sakar International. Today, Vivitar operates as a global brand under Sakar's umbrella, focusing on mass-market digital cameras, mobile accessories, and lifestyle electronics. While the creative and marketing direction remains based in the United States, current manufacturing is primarily outsourced to facilities in China and other Asian manufacturing hubs to cater to the consumer retail market.
