Skullcandy is a lifestyle audio brand that has become a staple in the action sports and youth culture markets. Founded in 2003 by Rick Alden and Cris Williams in Park City, Utah, the brand was born from a desire to create headphones that could seamlessly transition between music and cellular calls—a pioneering concept at the time. Their first product, the Skullcandy Portable Link, debuted at the 2003 CES and set the tone for the company's innovation-led growth.
While the brand's creative and strategic operations remain headquartered in the United States, its manufacturing is diversified across multiple global locations to maintain its competitive edge in the consumer electronics market. Historically, the brand has relied on high-quality production facilities in China and Vietnam to manufacture its extensive range of earbuds and headsets.
Ownership of the brand has evolved over the years. After a successful initial public offering (IPO) on the NASDAQ in 2011, Skullcandy returned to being a private entity in 2016. It is currently owned by Mill Road Capital, a private equity firm that acquired the company for approximately $197 million. Under this ownership, Skullcandy continues to focus on its roots in board sports and music while expanding into the high-end audio and gaming sectors.
