MyAnimeList, commonly known as MAL, is a premier social networking and anime/manga database application. It was launched in November 2004 by Garrett Gyssler as a personal project to track anime and manga consumption. Over the years, it has grown into one of the largest communities for anime enthusiasts globally, providing detailed information on titles, characters, and voice actors, while allowing users to rate and review content.
The service has seen several changes in ownership throughout its history. Originally founded in the United States, it was acquired by CraveOnline Media in 2008. In 2015, the Japanese company DeNA acquired the platform from Evolve Media (CraveOnline's parent). Most recently, in 2019, Media Do, one of Japan's largest digital book distributors, acquired the service to further expand its digital content footprint and international marketing capabilities. Today, the platform remains headquartered in the U.S. while operating under Japanese corporate strategy.
