Buitoni originated in Italy in 1827, founded by Giulia Buitoni and her husband Francesco. The company began as a small pasta shop in Sansepolcro, Tuscany, and went on to become an international icon for authentic Italian cuisine, ranging from pasta and sauces to ready-made pizza dough.
Over the decades, the brand's ownership has evolved significantly. In 1988, the Swiss multinational Nestlé acquired the Buitoni brand. More recently, in 2021, Nestlé sold a significant portion of its North American Buitoni business to the private equity firm Brynwood Partners. However, in Europe, ownership is often shared or licensed through various subsidiaries. The Italian-based Newlat Food acquired the dry pasta business, while Nestlé retains rights in numerous other regions and product categories. For consumers in Spain and many parts of Europe, Buitoni remains a staple in the refrigerated dough aisle, known for its focus on Mediterranean heritage.
