illy is a globally recognized Italian coffee brand founded in 1933 by Francesco Illy in Trieste. Known for its distinct performance in the premium coffee segment, the brand became famous for its pressurized nitrogen packaging which preserves the aroma of the beans. The Iperespresso system is their proprietary capsule technology designed to produce a professional-quality espresso at home.

Manufacturing takes place predominantly in Trieste, Italy, where the company maintains a centralized roasting and production facility to ensure consistent quality across its global distribution. The brand remains deeply rooted in Italian coffee culture while serving markets in over 140 countries.

Ownership of the brand is held by illycaffè S.p.A. For decades, it was entirely owned by the Illy family. However, in 2021, the private equity firm Rhone Capital acquired a 20% minority stake to accelerate international growth, while the Illy family retains the majority controlling interest.
