Bautz'ner is one of the most iconic mustard brands from Eastern Germany, specifically from the town of Bautzen in Saxony. Founded in 1953, the brand became a cultural staple during the GDR era and successfully transitioned into a national favorite after German reunification. It is celebrated for its distinctive vinegar-forward taste and smooth texture.
While the brand maintains its deep regional roots and continues to produce its famous mustard in Bautzen, ownership changed in the 1990s. It was acquired by the Bavarian company Develey Senf & Feinkost GmbH, which is one of Europe's leading condiment manufacturers. Today, Bautz'ner remains a key part of the Develey portfolio, benefiting from widespread distribution across major retailers like ALDI while preserving its traditional manufacturing location.
