Kobo is a major global brand in the e-reader and digital bookstore market. Originally founded in Canada, the brand was established to compete in the growing digital publishing space, eventually becoming a primary rival to Amazon's Kindle.
In 2012, Kobo was acquired by the Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten, which facilitated its expansion into international markets, including Portugal where it has a strong distribution partnership with FNAC. While the brand has Canadian roots and Japanese ownership, the hardware is primarily manufactured in China and Taiwan to leverage specialized electronic assembly ecosystems.
