Van Nelle Tobacco

Van Nelle is a historic Dutch brand with roots dating back to the 18th century, becoming synonymous with the industrial heritage of Rotterdam. Originally founded as a company specializing in tea, coffee, and tobacco, the brand is world-renowned for its unique blending techniques, particularly its zware (heavy) and shag tobacco varieties.

Today, the brand's manufacturing remains deeply rooted in European facilities, providing high-quality tobacco products to international markets. While the famous Van Nelle Factory in Rotterdam is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and no longer used for production, the brand continues to operate under modern corporate stewardship while maintaining its traditional Dutch identity.

Ownership of the Van Nelle brand has transitioned through major industry consolidations. It was acquired by Imperial Brands (formerly Imperial Tobacco) from Sara Lee/Douwe Egberts in the late 1990s.
