Motorola (Smartphones and Consumer Electronics)

Motorola is a historic brand in the telecommunications industry, originally founded in Chicago, Illinois, in 1928 as the Galvin Manufacturing Corporation. The brand pioneered the development of mobile communication, including the first commercial portable cellular phone. Over the decades, Motorola evolved into a global leader in high-tech electronics, but eventually split into two independent companies in 2011: Motorola Solutions and Motorola Mobility.

Motorola Mobility, the division responsible for consumer cell phones and smartphones, was first acquired by Google in 2012 before being sold to Lenovo in 2014. Today, Motorola operates as a major subsidiary of Lenovo, focusing on the Moto and Razr smartphone lines. While the brand maintains a significant research and design presence in its original home of Chicago, the vast majority of its manufacturing takes place in China, India, and Brazil to serve global markets. Ownership remains under Lenovo, headquartered in Hong Kong and Beijing.
