MediaMarkt is Europe's largest retailer of consumer electronics, founded in 1979 in Munich, Germany, by Erich and Helga Kellerhals, Leopold Stiefel, and Walter Gunz. The brand revolutionized the electronics market by moving away from small specialty shops toward large-scale 'big box' stores. In 1990, it merged with its competitor, Saturn, to form the MediaMarktSaturn Retail Group.
Historically part of the Metro Group, the brand was spun off into the holding company Ceconomy AG in 2017. As of 2026, the company's ownership structure has seen significant shifts, with the Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com securing a majority stake in Ceconomy AG (approximately 71% in partnership with Convergenta) following a takeover bid initiated in 2025. While MediaMarkt is a retailer and does not manufacture most of the goods it sells, its private-label brands like 'ok.', 'KOENIG', and 'PEAQ' are produced by various third-party manufacturers across Europe and Asia, primarily in China.
