Rakuten Kobo is a prominent global player in the digital reading industry, founded in 2009 in Toronto, Canada. Originally established as a digital reading platform called Shortcovers by the Canadian bookstore chain Indigo Books and Music, the brand was later renamed Kobo—an anagram of 'book'. Since its inception, Kobo has positioned itself as an open-ecosystem alternative to competitors, supporting a wide range of file formats to provide users with more freedom and control over their digital libraries.

In early 2012, Kobo was acquired by the Japanese e-commerce and technology conglomerate Rakuten Group. This acquisition integrated Kobo into Rakuten's extensive digital content ecosystem, facilitating significant international expansion. While the company remains headquartered in Toronto, where it continues to lead design and software engineering, its parent company is based in Tokyo, Japan. Under Rakuten's stewardship, Kobo has evolved beyond just e-reading hardware to include audiobooks, subscription services like Kobo Plus, and a global digital bookstore.

Technically, Kobo devices are manufactured through partnerships with electronics leaders in East Asia. Production is primarily centered in China and Taiwan, handled by specialized manufacturers such as Netronix Inc. These locations are chosen for their advanced electronic paper (E Ink) integration capabilities and large-scale consumer electronics assembly plants. The brand continues to innovate with features such as waterproof designs, color E Ink displays, and repairable hardware models like the Kobo Clara series launched in 2024 and 2025.
