Winsor & Newton is one of the world's most storied names in fine art materials, founded in London in 1832 by chemist William Winsor and artist Henry Newton. They are credited with inventing many of the materials used by modern artists, including glycerin-based moist watercolours and the iconic Series 7 Kolinsky Sable brush, which was famously commissioned by Queen Victoria.

Over the decades, the brand's production shifted from its original London roots. Today, much of the manufacturing for its professional-grade paints and mediums is carried out in Le Mans, France, at a facility shared with other heritage brands. Higher-volume or student-grade lines, such as many markers and sketchbooks, are produced in various global locations, including China. However, the company maintains a dedicated studio in the United Kingdom for the hand-craftsmanship of its premium brushes.

Ownership of the brand has transitioned from a family-led enterprise to a global corporate structure. In 1990, Winsor & Newton was acquired by the Swedish firm Colart, which is the dedicated art materials subsidiary of Lindéngruppen. Through this ownership, Winsor & Newton remains a cornerstone of the global creative industry, balancing its Victorian heritage with modern professional standards.
