Clairefontaine is an iconic French stationery brand synonymous with high-quality writing paper. The brand's history began in 1858 in the town of Étival-Clairefontaine, where Jean-Baptiste Bichelberger established a paper mill. It eventually became famous for its 'velouté' (velvet) paper, which is celebrated by students and professionals alike for its smooth texture and ink-friendly surface.
Today, the brand operates as part of the Exacompta Clairefontaine group, an integrated paper production and finishing company. Most of its manufacturing remains concentrated in France, particularly at its historical mills in the Vosges region, which utilize local water sources and sustainable forestry practices. The group manages the entire production cycle, from the purchase of pulp to the final bookbinding of its notebooks and diaries.
Ownership of the brand has remained remarkably stable. Clairefontaine is currently owned by the holding company Établissements Charles Nusse. This family-controlled structure ensures the preservation of the brand's heritage and its commitment to European manufacturing standards, maintaining its position as a leader in the global premium stationery market.
