The brand was established by the Vandemoortele Group with a focus on soy-based products before expanding into various plant bases like oat, almond, and hazelnut.

Over the decades, the brand underwent several ownership changes. It was acquired by the American food giant Dean Foods (specifically its WhiteWave business) in 2009. Later, in 2017, the multinational corporation Danone acquired WhiteWave Foods, bringing Alpro under its global umbrella. Manufacturing typically takes place at specialized plant-based production facilities across Europe, including major sites in Belgium, the United Kingdom, and France, to serve different regional markets.
