Van Nelle is a historic brand with deep roots in the Dutch industrial heritage, famously associated with the Van Nelle Factory in Rotterdam, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Originally founded in 1782, the company initially specialized in the trade of coffee, tea, and tobacco, growing into one of the most recognizable icons of Dutch commerce.

Over the centuries, the brand underwent significant corporate transitions. In the late 20th century, the tobacco division was acquired by the Dutch company Douwe Egberts (then a part of the American conglomerate Sara Lee Corporation). Eventually, the tobacco interests were sold off as part of a larger divestment strategy to the British multinational Imperial Brands.

Today, Van Nelle remains a premium name in the rolling tobacco market, known for its distinct 'zware' (heavy) and 'halfzware' (half-heavy) blends. While it maintains its Dutch identity through its branding and traditional blending profiles, the corporate ownership is entirely integrated into the global operations of Imperial Brands, based in the United Kingdom.
