Chubbies is an American lifestyle brand founded in 2011 by four friends—Kyle Hency, Rainer Castillo, Preston Rutherford, and Tom Montgomery—in San Francisco, California. The brand gained immense popularity through its digital-first marketing strategy and its signature 'retro' 5.5-inch inseam shorts, which challenged the long-boardshort dominated market. Over the years, the brand expanded from shorts to swim trunks, performance wear, and casual shirts.
While the company was conceptualized and is headquartered in the United States, its manufacturing operations are global. Chubbies utilizes a supply chain that spans multiple countries, including Vietnam, El Salvador, and China, to produce its various textile lines. This allows the brand to scale production for its large e-commerce customer base and retail partnerships.
In 2021, Chubbies reached a significant milestone when it was acquired by Solo Brands (formerly Solo Stove), a platform for outdoor and lifestyle brands. Today, Chubbies operates as a key subsidiary under Solo Brands, benefiting from shared logistics and marketing resources while maintaining its distinct brand voice centered on weekend leisure and fun.
