LU, which stands for Lefèvre-Utile, is an iconic French brand deeply rooted in the history of biscuit making. Founded in Nantes in 1846, it transitioned from a local bakery to a global powerhouse. The Prince line of chocolate-filled biscuits is one of its most recognizable products worldwide. Today, the brand is part of the Mondelēz International portfolio, which manages its wide distribution. Production occurs across various facilities, primarily in Europe (with significant manufacturing still in France and Belgium) to serve the global market.
Ownership has shifted over the decades from the founding family to multinational corporations. In 2007, Kraft Foods acquired Groupe Danone's biscuit division (which included LU), and in 2012, Kraft spun off its snack division into Mondelēz International. This American-based multinational remains the ultimate owner, overseeing the brand's production and marketing strategy through various regional subsidiaries.
