The lava lamp was invented in 1963 by Edward Craven Walker, the founder of the British company Mathmos. Originally marketed under the name Astro Lamp, the product became an iconic symbol of 1960s psychedelic culture and mid-century modern design.
Today, Mathmos continues to manufacture its classic lava lamps in the United Kingdom, specifically in Poole, Dorset. While there are many generic competitors and 'lava' style lamps produced globally (particularly in China), the original Mathmos brand remains privately owned by the company founded by its inventor, maintaining a commitment to high-quality craftsmanship and British manufacturing heritage.
