McVitie's Hobnobs are a staple of British snack culture, first launched in 1985 before the chocolate-topped version was introduced in 1987. Originally founded in Edinburgh, Scotland, by Robert McVitie in 1830, the brand has deep historic roots in the UK. While it was once a purely Scottish enterprise, its manufacturing and corporate headquarters have evolved significantly. Today, McVitie's is the leading biscuit brand in the UK and is manufactured primarily at large-scale facilities in Harlesden, London, and Manchester. In 2022, the brand closed its final Scottish factory, marking a transition to entirely English-based production for its domestic market.

Ownership of the brand transitioned from its original founders to the United Biscuits group in 1948. In 2014, United Biscuits was acquired by the Turkish conglomerate Yıldız Holding. Since 2016, the brand has been managed under Pladis, a global snacking subsidiary of Yıldız Holding. As of 2026, Pladis continues to invest heavily in its UK manufacturing sites to maintain McVitie's status as a dominant global confectionery brand.
