It was originally developed in 1933 by Dr. Vernon Charley at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom. Its historical significance grew during World War II when it was provided to children as a vital source of Vitamin C after citrus fruits became scarce.

While the brand has British origins, its corporate journey has seen several changes. For decades, it was a cornerstone brand for the British pharmaceutical company Beecham (later GlaxoSmithKline). In 2013, the brand was acquired by the Japanese beverage conglomerate Suntory Group. Today, it is managed under the Suntory Beverage & Food division. Manufacturing for the European and Scandinavian markets typically occurs at the company's large-scale production facility in Coleford, Gloucestershire, United Kingdom, which handles the majority of the global supply.
