HOKA (formerly Hoka One One) was founded in Annecy, France, in 2009 by Nicolas Mermoud and Jean-Luc Diard. The brand revolutionized the running world with its maximalist design, featuring oversized outsoles and superior cushioning aimed at providing stability and speed for ultramarathon runners.

Following its rapid rise in popularity, the brand was acquired by the American footwear conglomerate Deckers Brands in 2013. Under Deckers' ownership, HOKA expanded its line from niche trail running shoes to a global lifestyle and performance brand catering to road runners, hikers, and casual wearers.

While the brand's design roots are French and its corporate headquarters are now in the United States, manufacturing is distributed globally. Most HOKA products are manufactured in Vietnam, China, and Cambodia, which is standard for high-performance athletic footwear production.
