Founded in 1993 by Angus Thirlwell and Peter Harris, Hotel Chocolat has grown from an online business into a globally recognized luxury British chocolatier. The brand is celebrated for its 'more cocoa, less sugar' philosophy and its unique position as one of the few chocolate makers to actually grow their own cocoa on their estate, the Rabot Estate in Saint Lucia.
Historically an independent British success story, the brand underwent a significant transformation in late 2023 and 2024 when it was acquired by the global food and beverage giant Mars, Incorporated. This acquisition was designed to provide the financial backing and logistical infrastructure necessary to expand the premium brand into broader international markets.
While the company sources fine cocoa from its Caribbean plantation, the majority of its manufacturing, design, and innovation continues to take place at its dedicated production facility in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom. As of 2026, the brand operates as an autonomous standalone business unit under the Mars umbrella, maintaining its high-end positioning while benefiting from the global reach of its parent corporation.
